New Border, Immigration Proposal

Nancy Pelosi breaks her word that the Democratic Leadership will negotiate in good faith with the President after he first opens the government. Pelosi told reporters that she would allow a vote on any agreement the conference committee reaches in the next few weeks, but then added, "There’s not going to be any wall money in the legislation.”

President Donald Trump announced that he would sign legislation to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals beneficiaries from deportation for three years in exchange for the $5.7 billion he wants for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.

  • $5.7 billion to fund a steel barrier system, including embedded investments in technology and roads.
  • $805 million for technology, canines, and personnel to help stop the flow of illegal drugs, weapons and other contraband.
  • $800 million dollars in humanitarian assistance, medical support, and new temporary housing.
  • $782 million to hire an additional 2,750 border agents, law enforcement officers, and staff.
  • $563 million to support our immigration court system, including hiring 75 new immigration judge teams to reduce the immigration court backlog of 800,000 cases.
  • Provisional status will be granted for three years for current DACA recipients, covering 700,000 illegal immigrants brought here by their parents at a young age.
  • Provisional status will be granted to certain current TPS recipients for three years, providing 300,000 immigrants whose protected status is facing expiration more certainty as Congress works on a larger immigration deal.

President Donald Trump:

"To every member of Congress: Pass a bill that ends this crisis. To every citizen: Call Congress and tell them to finally, after all of these decades, secure our border. This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice. This is about whether we fulfill our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve."

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD):

“It was President Trump who took away DACA and TPS protections in the first place, and his proposal today does not provide the permanent solution that DREAMers and TPS recipients deserve. Democrats have proposed border security items such as advanced technology, infrastructure investments, and humanitarian assistance; the President mentioned some of these items today.

“I urge the President to reopen government now and for Senator McConnell to allow a vote on any of the eight bills that have passed the House to reopen government. With the government open, we can negotiate an agreement to strengthen border security that both sides can support and that is in the best interests of the American people.”
